NBA: Top 10 Power Ranking Update for October 27

By Kid Kelly

The NBA is already off to a surprising season.

There have been quite a few disappointed fans so far with their NBA teams performing lower than expected. The updated power rankings see the former underdog, Houston, fall low on the list while Golden State remains on top.

10. Houston Rockets

Off to a 1-4 start, the Rockets did not start this NBA season well. Chris Paul found himself suspended after a fight broke out during the game with the Lakers, which considerably hurt the team. However, Paul himself and the rest of the Rockets seem to understand their real weakness is on defense. For now, Houston promises to focus on being the best team they can be this year rather than look back to 2017.

9. San Antonio Spurs

Currently 2-2, the Spurs are in the middle of the NBA pack as they try to figure out what needs correcting to move up to the top. The team is lacking chemistry both offensively and defensively, but the Spurs reassure fans they’re working on it.

Right now, the 76ers are experimenting with a new offense which doesn’t seem to be working. At 2-3, something needs to change if they want to have the explosive offense like they did last season. The most obvious reason is Markelle Fultz still starting over JJ Redick. Over time, the young player could very well be a powerhouse. However, right now Fultz is averaging 8.6 points, 1.8 turnovers, 3.8 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 39.6% field goal percentage per game this season. Coming off the bench this Redick has 21.2 points, 0.8 turnovers, 3.6 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 43.9% field goal percentage per game.

7.  Boston Celtics

If a team was going to upset the Golden State Warriors this year in the NBA (yes, we just assume they’ll be making the finals every season), the Celtics were expected to be the ones. They’re at 3-2 right now and need to reinvigorate their offense. Ranking near the bottom in the league with shooting, Boston will need to step up their game to contend with the offensive giants in the league.

6. Indiana Pacers

The Pacers are 3-2 right now which does show the team is beginning to iron out the kinks in the lineup. With one of the better benches in the team, Indiana just needs to figure out how to use that depth to their advantage. Fans shouldn’t be worried yet, they still look strong this year as they figure things out.

5. Milwaukee Bucks

Second in their division and undefeated, the Bucks are looking great this season. Giannis Antetokounmpo is making a good case for the MVP award this year averaging 25.8 points, 6.6 assists, 15.6 rebounds, and 48.1% field goal percentage per game. Look for them to quickly keep moving up this list with the way they’re playing.

4. Denver Nuggets

At 4-1 right now, the Nuggets find themselves third in an extremely tough division. Nikola Jokic has been doing a commendable job and he holds the belief you don’t need a super team to win. That’s true, you don’t but the Nuggets do need to address some concerns when it comes to being the team to take on the title. Namely, their defense has been adequate but nothing to write home about.

3. New Orleans Pelicans

Right now, the Pelicans are getting a lot of attention in the NBA for their 4-0 record and the fact that they currently sit at the top of their division over the Warriors. However, save the Rockets, New Orleans has had a relatively easy schedule so far. They play the Nuggets on Monday and fans will have a clearer picture at just how good this team can be. Anthony Davis has been on fire as he’s also in the running for MVP this year.

2. Golden State Warriors

The Warriors are currently second in their division under the Pelicans with their 5-1 record. What’s there to say about them? Steph Curry is averaging 33.7 points, 1 steal, 6 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 55.1% field goal percentage, and 52.7% from the 3 point line per game. With Curry as one of the leaders of this team, it’s unlikely Golden State falls much farther than second place.

1. Toronto Raptors

Right now, the Raptors are 6-0 and number one in their division. This team has set a franchise record with their undefeated streak right now. What’s terrifying for other NBA teams regarding the Raptors is how strong this defense is. A lot of teams have explosive offenses but have struggled to defend. This could be a team which upsets a lot of stars this season.
